It's been said a million times and joked about at least twice as much (mostly by my friends and me!) but undeniably it
is true. The joy I experience writing my novels far surpasses the fleeting joy of completion.
Mel, Kit, Marc and Charlie Brown are as real to me as my own family and friends. When I finished the last sentence and
typed the last period of With Her Boots On I had a huge, wonderful momentary sense of completion but it was gone before
the celebratory After Eight mint. The knowledge that the story was over and I wouldn't be writing about my friends any
longer smothered all sense of satisfaction.
My third novel (untitled) will be different than the first two. Mel and Kit are going to get a break and I miss them
terribly already. As I begin the next part of my journey with new, strange characters I feel like I'm at a cocktail
party where I don't know anyone. The new characters are not my friends yet; I've only just met them.
But the journey must continue so I begin. I take the first step with a box of After Eights in one hand, a straightening
iron in the other and the knowledge that I am very lucky to have the opportunity to be able to tell the next story.
